Sustainable Stone Confab at Carrara

MARINA di CARRARA, Italy — The First Annual International Sustainable Stone Conference will be held here on May 20, in conjunction with the Carrara Marmotec 2016 trade event.

250CARRARAMARMOTECThe event aims to promote the creation of a meeting platform where academic researchers and business professionals can discuss and exchange viewpoints on the ways to foster the transition of the stone sector toward a circular economy

The conference aims to give an up-to-date overview of the research on the topic of sustainability at an international level and provides actual cases and best practice examples from the international stone industry excellence.

The conference will deal with topics concerning the application and demonstration of sustainable solutions and production systems in the sector of raw materials and construction, to improve environmental, economic and social impacts.

The all-day event includes a morning plenary session, “Sustainablity and Circular Economy in the Stone Sector,” including presentations by Jim Hieb and David Castellucci of the MIA+BSI (which is one of the conference organizers) and Peter Becker of Stone-Ideas.com.

Afternoon activities include three parallel sessions:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Recovery and recycling of waste and sludge resulting from processing systems, saving resources and energy systems, environmental impact assessment systems (life-cycle assessment), management systems and environmental labels.
  • Socio-economic Sustainability: International best practices for the assessment of social impact in the stone industry, methods for the measurement of shared value, innovative approaches in the field of safety and training, certification and trademarks, business networks, innovation, creation of local added value, start-up, industrial tourism.
  • Ecodesign with Natural Stone: Sustainable design, eco-friendly products, Creative recycling.

Related to the parallel sessions will be the submission of 32 academic papers on related topics. All the submitted papers will be published, after a peer review, by the Italian Journal of Engineering Geology and Environment in a special issue dedicated to the event.
