Stone Catches Top CID Awards

ATLANTA – Stonework is prominent among the 15 projects recognized in the second annual Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Awards announced at the stone-and-tile event last week.

CID700The CID Awards celebrate creativity and technical know-how in the use of tile and stone in residential and commercial projects. Projects were judged and awarded separately on technical installation and design, with one Grand Prize winner for both design and installation in each category (residential and commercial).

Phoenix-based installer Alpentile and designer Wendy Lesueur of Mesa, Ariz, took the top residential prize for a pool and deck in Scottsdale, Ariz. The big award in commercial went to installer KEPCO+ of Salt Lake City and designer Ross Nadeau of SWA Group in San Francisco for a massive water feature at City Creek Center, a mall in Salt Lake City. Each of the top honorees won a $1,000 cash grand prize.

Ten other projects were also recognized for exceptional design and installation work from the more than 97 entries received from around the world. The winners were awarded $500 cash prizes from Coverings.

The replication of City Creek, a spring-fed artery long since moved underground with urbanization, involved 275 boulders of local sandstone as part of a water feature stretching for more than 12,000.

After mapping out stone placement via 3D modeling, installation included an off-site mockup before trying to place the feature onsite in a tight six-week production window. All boulders are secured with stainless-steel anchors engineered for water and seismic concerns.

The site also features seven solid-stone fountains. The Transcend fountain includes 176 holes for waterjets and light fixtures, and 49 holes for gas-fueled fire nozzles.
