MIA Gets Correction on Granite Countertop TV Report

CLEVELAND – The Marble Institute of America (MIA) obtained a correction from a daytime talk show that ran a segment last month linking granite countertops and radon/radiation health risks.

200 doctors-showCBS Television Distributing pulled the web playback of an Oct. 24 report on The Doctors concerning granite tops, which included the alleged claim that, “the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) says that some stone presents the same health risks as smoking a half pack of cigarettes per day.”

Links to the segment are now gone on the website of the show and other websites linking to the segment. In addition, any search of the show’s website for related keywords leads to a page noting that the report “inadvertently attributed” the half-pack claim.

A note to association members from MIA President Jonathan Zanger noted that the group raised more than $100,000 this year for its Truth About Granite Fund to cover the costs of recent research efforts concerning granite safety, although an additional $40,000 to fully subsidize the program and take steps steps needed to get the findings published in a scientific journal.
