MATERIALS: Waterjet-cut Basalt
Walker Zanger, Los Angeles, introduces the Stardust collection, with waterjet-cut lava stone set in a mosaic and glazed to achieve a textured, hand-crafted design with a variety of sleek, modern patterns.
•The Stardust collection draws inspiration from midcentury textiles and interiors, with a textural glaze reminiscent of midcentury “fat lava” style pottery. It is water-jet cut from volcanic basalt rock, then glazed and assembled into mosaics. By combining this tactile, hand-crafted look with sleek, modern patterns, Stardust creates a unique visual language.
The white and silver glazes are reminiscent of the moon’s surface, which inspired the Stardust name as well as celestial-themed designs, such as Apollo, Cosmos, Eclipse and Zenith. The colors also relate to heavenly themes, with names like Moon Rock, Solar and Twilight. All are inspired by the 1970s era of glam rock and visual experimentation, reminiscent of metallic wallpaper and mirrored surfaces, creating a blend of bright metallics, cool neutrals, and bold blacks-and-whites.
“We are seeing a definite trend toward using texture and metallics in design,” said Jared Becker, Walker Zanger vice president of design and marketing. “With Stardust, we used the highly-textured lava stone combined with a metallic glaze to accentuate the tactile depth, and fully embraced a modern aesthetic.”
