Designers Favor Quartz, Quartzite: NKBA
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) trends report for 2026 is good news for hard surfaces … as long as quartz is in the name.

When it comes to countertops, quartz remains the number one material choice, according to 78% of the respondents. The main reason is that it provides the look of natural stone without the maintenance.
When it comes to the real stuff, quartzite is in second place. Less than half of the respondents (43%) claim that granite will be a major material in kitchens, and marble weighed in at 26%, likely because of its high-maintenance nature.
That’s not to say the look of marble isn’t still hot, though. Lighter-colored countertops are in, often paired with darker cabinetry, in matte or honed finishes. Matte finishes are also extending to sinks, faucets and even lighting fixtures.
The preference for low-maintenance materials extends to backsplashes, where designers see ceramic and porcelain tiles as the dominant choices. Quartz and quartzite are also in the mix.
Survey results noted that cook spaces are growing larger and playing an increasingly large role in the overall design plans for U.S. homes. Other trends the survey noted include a blending of traditional and modern design aesthetics, with modern minimalism a second choice.
Not surprisingly, neutral colors – browns, grays, black and white – still dominate the color palette, although there’s some interest in green and blue tones, possibly through backsplashes, wallpaper and accessories.
White oak cabinets remain at the top of the list for survey respondents, with many saying it will remain the top cabinet material for the next three years. European doors – also known as flat panel slabs – are the prevailing door choice.
The information is based on a survey of more than 600 industry professionals, including designers, contractors and manufacturers.
