Minneapolis Mausoleum Tops 2012 Pinnacle Awards
LAS VEGAS – Grazzini Brothers & Company took the top honor in the 2012 Pinnacle Awards from the Marble Institute of America (MIA) for its interior installation work at the Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum in Minneapolis.
The Eagan, Minn.-based company shared the Fifth Annual Grande Pinnacle Award, sponsored by the Marmomacc trade event, with HGA Architects of Minneapolis.
Grazzini officials received the award during the MIA’s annual Awards Luncheon here during StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas late last month.
At the mausoleum’s entry, an intricately patterned white mosaic rendered in infinite loops across white billowing surfaces re-imagines the historic 1910 Lakewood Chapel’s colorful mosaic interiors. The interior committal space is clad with Alabama White marble walls; horizontal bands of split-faced gray granite tie the structure to the earth. Inset floors of luminious onyx alternate between green, honey and coral pink, with accents of Nero Marquina marble.
Judges for the 2012 Pinnacle Awards competition were Mac Walcott of Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects, Fairhope, Ala; Carter Quina, AIA, of Quina Grundhoefer Architects in Pensacola, Fla.; Christian R. Pongratz of Pongratz Perbellini Architects, Verona, Italy, and Berlin; and Gasper (G.K.) Naquin, immediate MIA past president, of Stone Interiors, Loxley, Ala.
The annual Pinnacle Awards competition, sponsored by the MIA, are given to projects whose beauty, creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship exemplify professional mastery in the use of natural stone in commercial and residential environments. Entry is open to MIA members.
For this year’s competition, projects must be completed between January 2010-July 2013. Entry forms will be available from the MIA on May 1.
