“We have guys who’ve stated a desire to learn to do irrigation, and more carpentry and fencing,” she says. “We’re also looking at more organic lawn applications and composting. Right now, we want to stay stable through the transition, but when we leap in new directions, those are probably some of the areas we’ll leap into.”

200 bridge cropClick photo to enlargeAnother concern: space. A Yard & A Half is currently located in a mixed use area and while the space includes a garage, office and yard, Edsell-Vetter says it could rapidly be outgrown.

“Fortunately, we have a full-time operations manager, Mario Pineda, who’s really great about keeping things organized and keeping up on what needs to be delivered directly to a jobsite and what gets delivers to inventory,” she says. “He probably increases our space by a third just by being organized, but space is something we think about when we think about growth.”

Ultimately, though, Edsell-Vetter says for her the future is about taking A Yard & A Half to an even higher level than it currently is.

“On the hardscape side, it’s about getting better and learning more, whether it’s the newest specifications for a product or how to improve our base preparation that makes our installations better and our guarantee better,” she concludes. “What we’re really about is continuous learning.”
