MIA To Offer North American Stone iPad App
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – The Marble Institute of America (MIA) will offer access to North American stone as a sustainable material through an iPad next month.
MAPEI, will provide a quick online database of native materials and for architects and other design professionals, beginning April 1.
“Stones of North America,” produced in partnership withThe application features a simple search method for selecting stone type, along with photographs and other information. Users will also be able to geo-locate quarry and processing locations for project owners desiring locally sourced materials—a major tenet in the sustainability movement.
Based on the intended use of a stone, architects can select CAD drawings and specifications for the installation directly from the app to insert them in project plans. The data is based on the 2011 Tile Council of North America Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation. MAPEI’s Technical Services Department provided the drawings and specifications, which are specific to stone tile installations.
The app also includes a full copy of MIA’s Dimension Stone Design Manual.
“MAPEI feels that this innovative iPad application will help architects make superior choices for their designs, and it will enable them to have the installation methods at their fingertips,” said Real Bourdage, MAPEI director of strategic marketing. “We’re pleased that we could help the MIA with the development of this app, and appreciate the opportunity to support the association.”
“The support of MAPEI has been a key driver of the ‘Stones of North America’ iPad app development, and it clearly wouldn’t be as valuable a resource without their support and their added technical content,” added MIA Executive Vice President and CEO Gary Distelhorst.
The app will be featured at the MIA’s exhibit at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) national convention in Washington this May.
