Little Houses for Big Results
TOLEDO, Ohio – MR Direct is known for offering its line of sinks and faucets, but the company took on a whole house – in a small scale – in late May.
A volunteer crew from the sink company joined 29 other Northwest Ohio business on May 31, 2018 for Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Project Playhouse Program, creating play structures in a community fundraising effort.
Each of the 30 families chosen to receive a dwelling was able to request a theme for it based on their children’s interests. Designs ranged from an Ohio State/Michigan rivalry motif to a “Little” Man Cave created by the MR Direct team.
Each playhouse was constructed by a team of eight to ten workers and took over six hours to complete; the concourse at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team, served as the assembly area.
The materials were pre-cut to allow for easy construction. Volunteers put together doors, windows, trim, roofing, and then designed and colorfully painted the structure.
“The playhouses are sponsored by the teams building them, and their sponsorships then help build big houses,” said Erin McPartland, development director for Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity. “So I like to say, ‘Little houses are helping to build big houses.’”
Sponsorships start at $3,000 and the proceeds go towards the construction of a full-size Habitat for Humanity house in the Toledo community in 2018.
“Seeing everyone come together for a common goal was inspiring, and to know that you are providing a service that you could see a family benefit from, meant everything, “said Paul Best, MR Direct marketing coordinator. “It was a fantastic experience that MR Direct was grateful to be a part of.”
